Forest Learning

Whispering Oaks Cabins are located in such a great environment for learning and exploring, we decided to provide something interesting and unique for our guests. So in Spring 2008, we started FOREST LEARNING. On designated weekends, we offered guided hikes or creative classes taught exclusively to guests at Whispering Oaks Cabins by experts in the field.

Thank you to everyone who participated in Forest Learning 2009. Next year we hope to add additional classes to the program! Watch this space.

Exploring Pottery

Merlin and Cheryl from New Salem Stoneware are fantastic at teaching their craft. They took 8 people with basically no experience, and in 4 hours turned them into potters...well almost. Everyone completed at least 3 works of art to be glazed and fired. There was time to work on the wheel and with slabs. The weather was sunny and the studio inspiring. See the results for yourself.

Beginning Stained Glass

Dave and Melody's house is a place of inspiration. Their up-stairs studio overlooking the Clarion River was perfect for teaching beginners about the art of stained glass. After a brief intro and history, the guests learned to cut, wrap, and solder, sometimes easier said than done. The end result was a beautiful star. Dave teaches more advanced classes over several days, so maybe we can get it on the schedule for next year.

Wilderness Basket Class

Basket weaving may sound simple, but it is definitely hard work. Guests this year spent an entire day with Kathy Seamans in her studio making a twill basket with a natural wood handle. The first thing that they learned was weaving is not delicate; lots of pulling, stacking and bending! Al got creative and deviated slightly from the pattern, but all of the finished products looked great!
